As an artist, I’m certainly aware of and sensitive to copyright issues on the web. However, I have to agree with the many who are saying that there are better ways to go about avoiding piracy without bringing in the government. If SOPA passes, the government could issue a court order against an artist or website to have the work and artist removed. Many artists rely on virtual fans; the sharing and discussing of works. I’ve never met an artist who minds this, as long as credit is given and the images are kept intact. If SOPA passes, sites like Tumblr, Facebook, DeviantArt.. could be gone. What about the many websites that host a number of artist’s work? Never mind that if the government is allowed this privilege, who’s to say how far they’ll take it? There’s many articles and blog posts on the web right now about this subject, but I found this one especially interesting.

For this reason, I will be offline and in blackout tomorrow for 24 hours in protest of SOPA.

A couple of years ago, a friend was going through a really rough time. I painted this to remind him that no matter how small you feel, there is great strength to be found within. At times, life requires a brutal attitude.

“Bring it on! Whatever it takes, in the end I will stand Victorious.”

This piece is 16×20 oil on canvas and is currently residing at the friend’s house.

Around 2006 (or so), a simple request was made: “Paint me a super hero.” Drawing comics/ fictional characters is my first love, so I was super excited about it. The sketch seen here is the rough draft of the idea (emphasis on “rough”). Because I misjudged the length of the full piece, I had to complete the bottom portion of the drawing on a different piece of paper, which is why there is a visible line just above her left foot. The painting was completed with oil on board and is around 24″x36″. The person making the request was insistent on calling me by my first name (no, I’m not telling you what it is) and is why the piece is signed with a “D” as opposed to the usual MX.
